Telecoms company AT&T said the company will switch to green packaging for wireless device accessories in a bid to save 200t of wasted plastic and paper this year.It aims to eliminate about 60% of paper and up to 30% of plastic packaging previously used in accessory products.
The US teleservice provider said it will change the packaging for batteries and data cables to recyclable paper boxes. Packaging for protective phone cases and car chargers will also contain less material.
The packaging changes will equate to reducing more than 1,100 cubic yards of landfill space by the end of 2010, the company said.
Under the company's new manufacturing requirements for wireless phones suppliers, 75% of new devices should be at least 65% recyclable.
