While China is demanding more and more plastic flexible packaging, which accounts for about 30% of the country's packaging industry in terms of output of industry, it is at the same time having higher requirements on performance and environmental friendliness.
High performance
According to Zeng Yanju, Director of Information Department of China National Packaging Import & Export Corporation, China is currently looking for more sophisticated plastic packaging materials ¡V in particular high-barrier, aseptic and nano-composite ones.
Co-extrusion high-barrier composite films can extend a product's shelf life and preserve a product's quality and freshness. Apart from conventional materials such as poly(vinylidene dichloride) (PVDC), ethylene and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), the market is at the same time looking for new environmentally friendly alternatives like polyviny alcohol (PVA), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), nylon MXD6 and nano inorganic materials.
Zeng Yanju on Chinaplas 2007 press conference recently held in Beijing. | The market for aseptic packaging materials is also very promising in China. This type of materials can preserve the original favor and nutrition value of packaged food and extend their shelf life without the need for preservatives or a freezer. Also facilitating storage and transportation, it has been gaining acceptance in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food seasonings fields, apart from traditional use in dairy products and fruit juice.
The development of nano composite packaging materials in China has been unprecedentedly fast in recent years. This has made this revolutionary type of material more rigid, strong, wear resistant and deformable. Apart from food packaging, nano composite packaging materials can also be used to in goods requiring anti-static, anti-magnetic or invisible packaging. In addition, it can be used in packaging for use in microwave or induction cookers.
In addition, with the launch of the environment management standard ISO 14000, the role of recyclable plastics packaging materials such as PET and PEN, and biodegradable material like EDP, have become increasingly important. Other packaging solutions such as "zero contamination" foam plastics, thin-walled bottles and bag shaped containers are also receiving great attention.
Environmentally friendly
The market is not only looking for high performance plastics flexible packaging, but also packaging that is recyclable, degradable and safe to use.
Ms Zeng says that environmental friendliness and usage safety are new topics in the manufacturing of flexible packaging. On one hand, the Chinese government has introduced a number of new regulations and standards to ensure environmental friendliness and usage safety of products. On the other hand, the user industries are also having higher requirements in these two aspects.
According to a recent survey quoted by Ms Zeng, up to 16% of the food manufacturers and 23% of the medicine suppliers in China have imposed strict requirements on the usage of solvents and ink on plastics flexible packaging, and all packaging products have to be GMP and QS certified.
